Introduction

Welcome to our genealogy site. On these pages you can discover our family’s history as we trace the ancestry of Edward and Constance (Lafayette) Nowell, Luther and Lola (Todd) Leighton, and Joseph and Mary (Scanlon) Dwyer. Like all families, ours has a rather long, rambling history, because as you go backwards in time your family expands exponentially —we each have 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great grandparents, 16 second great grandparents, and on and on, not to mention all the aunts, uncles and cousins!

I have been researching the family since 2008 and  I have accumulated a lot of information which I will share with you in this blog and in a genealogy database, Our Family Tree. To have full access to the database you will need to fill our our short registration form. After you receive your confirmation email you can log in for complete access to the site. (We are updating various pages on the Help menu and they will be available soon.)

While you will find a lot of information in Our Family Tree database, this blog will offer more personal sketches of our ancestors and the times and places where they raised their families and worked and worshiped. Part of the fun in genealogy is hunting for clues about an ancestor and some of my blog posts will describe the discovery process.

This is a work in progress, so I hope you will come back often to see what’s new here or in Our Family Tree database. New facts are constantly coming to light, some of which may replace previous data. Also, please contact me if you have new information to contribute, need to correct an error, have a question, or just want to touch base. I’d love to hear from you!

This genealogy is dedicated to our children and grandchildren. May you be enriched, enlightened and encouraged by the saga of our great family.

Our Earliest Immigrant Ancestors came to America on the Mayflower in 1620

The year 2020 is the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage, and our ancestors include several of those who made that harrowing trip to America in 1620 on the famous little ship. In the next paragraphs click their names to go to their profiles in Our Family Tree database.

Through Lucy Ann Kemp, who married Charles Frederick Nowell in 1865, the Nowells in our family are descended from Lucy’s 6th great-grandfathers, Peter Brown and George Soule, and her 7th great-grandfather, Francis Cooke.

Through Eleanor Sinclair Gustin, who married Jesse Clinton Lafayette in 1910, the Lafayettes and Gustins in our family are descended from Eleanor’s 7th great-grandfather, Francis Eaton, her 8th great-grandfather, Degory Priest, and her 9th great-grandfather, Thomas Rogers.

Both the Nowells and the Lafayette-Gustins are descended from John Alden & his wife Priscilla and Priscilla’s parents, William Mullins & his wife Alice. The Aldens are Lucy Kemp Nowell’s 6th great-grandparents and Eleanor Gustin Lafayette’s 7th great-grandparents.

To celebrate the 400th anniversary the General Society of Mayflower Descendants has planned many special events and projects which you can check out here. To learn more about our Mayflower ancestors check out MayflowerHistory.com.
