Different areas have slightly different versions, Slovak Halusky is more of a potato dumpling while other areas enjoy it as cabbage and noodles. This needs a big pot and a non-stick skillet.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the good ol&#8217; days of early 2022, kielbasa and other smoked sausages came in 14 oz packages. Now they&#8217;re only 12 oz. Marginally enough, I&#8217;ve updated this to call for 16-24 oz.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">8<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">oz uncooked egg noodles<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">2<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">TBS olive oil, divided<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">16-24<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">oz kielbasa or other pre-cooked sausage, sliced<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">\u00bc<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">cup salted butter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">1<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">large onion, diced<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">\u00bd-1<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">head cabbage, chopped (approx. 6-8 cups)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">1<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">clove garlic, minced<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">\u2154<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">cup frozen peas<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"id-ingredient-name\">salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cook <strong>noodles<\/strong> in a 6-quart sauce pot or dutch oven according to package directions, drain and set aside.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> You can use the same pot used for the <strong>noodles<\/strong> to cook the <strong>kielbasa<\/strong>, but it tends to leave a nasty residue that is hard to clean. It is generally better to use a non-stick skillet.<\/p>\n<p>Using the pan of your choice, over medium high heat, add 1 TBS <strong>olive oil<\/strong> and heat until shimmering. Add <strong>kielbasa<\/strong> and cook until lightly browned, about 3 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Add the remaining <b>olive oil<\/b>, <b>butter<\/b> and <b>diced onion<\/b>. Cook until <b>onion<\/b> is softened, about 5 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>If you used a separate pan for the <b>kielbasa<\/b>, dump the contents into the noodle pan now.<\/p>\n<p>Add the <b>cabbage<\/b> and <strong>garlic<\/strong>. The pot will be very full, but the <b>cabbage<\/b> will wilt while cooking. Cover and cook until tender (10-15 minutes), stirring occasionally.<\/p>\n<p>Stir in <b>peas<\/b>, <strong>noodles<\/strong> and <strong>salt<\/strong> &amp; <strong>pepper<\/strong>. Cook 2-3 minutes or until heated through. Taste and check for final seasoning.
