The bento box originates in the 12th-13th century, as a way for Japanese workers to take food to work. We&#8217;ll stop the history lesson here, even though the flavors of this bento-inspired dish speak for themselves. Steak strips in garlic sauce and sweet mirin sit atop rice with fresh carrots and broccoli. Add some peanuts for a salty crunch, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>red pepper flakes<\/strong><\/span> for a bit of heat, and you&#8217;ve got a meal-in-a-box that&#8217;s a bowlful of joy. Tip: To peel the carrot with less effort, lay it down on your cutting board peel one half, rolling it as you peel. Reduce to a simmer, cover, and cook until <strong>rice<\/strong> is tender, 18-20 minutes. Remove from burner and set aside covered. While <strong>rice<\/strong> cooks, prepare ingredients.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-52468\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nowellfamily.org\/cookbook\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/09\/SteakBentoBoxPrep.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Prepare the Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cut <strong>broccoli<\/strong> into bite-sized pieces, if necessary. Coarsely chop <strong>peanuts.<\/strong> Peel, trim, and cut <strong>carrot<\/strong> into \u00bc&#8221; slices on an angle. In a mixing bowl, combine <strong>cornstarch<\/strong> and 2 tsp <strong>water<\/strong> until dissolved. Separate <strong>steak strips<\/strong> into a single layer and pat dry. Season all over with <strong>seasoned salt<\/strong> and a pinch of <strong>pepper.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-52467\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nowellfamily.org\/cookbook\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/09\/SteakBentoBoxSteak.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cook the Steak Strips<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Place a large non-stick pan over medium-high heat and add 2 tsp <strong>olive oil<\/strong>. Working in batches, if necessary, add <strong>steak strips<\/strong> to hot pan and stir occasionally until no pink remains, 5-7 minutes. Transfer <strong>steak strips<\/strong> to a plate. Add <strong>carrot<\/strong> and a pinch of <strong>salt<\/strong> and <strong>pepper<\/strong> to hot pan. Stir often until lightly browned, 2-3 minutes. Add \u00bc cup <strong>water,<\/strong> and cover. Cook until <strong>water<\/strong> is mostly evaporated, and <strong>carrots<\/strong> are tender, 3-5 minutes. Transfer <strong>carrot<\/strong> to a plate. Keep pan over medium-high heat. Add 2 tsp <strong>olive oil<\/strong>, <strong>broccoli,<\/strong> and a pinch of <strong>salt<\/strong> and <strong>pepper<\/strong> to hot pan. Stir until <strong>steak<\/strong> strips and <strong>vegetables<\/strong> are lightly glazed, 1-2 minutes. Remove from burner. Plate dish as pictured on front of card, topping <strong>rice<\/strong> with <strong>steak strips<\/strong> and <strong>vegetables<\/strong> and garnishing with <strong>peanuts<\/strong> and <strong>red pepper flakes<\/strong> (to taste).
