{"id":55093,"date":"2025-03-15T15:39:02","date_gmt":"2025-03-15T15:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nowellfamily.org\/cookbook\/?p=55093"},"modified":"2025-03-15T15:39:02","modified_gmt":"2025-03-15T15:39:02","slug":"irish-apple-cake-with-custard-sauce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nowellfamily.org\/cookbook\/2025\/03\/15\/irish-apple-cake-with-custard-sauce\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish Apple Cake with Custard Sauce"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Yield: 12<\/h4>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\">Billy Parisi<\/h6>\n<p>This delicious homemade apple cake recipe is easy to prepare and is topped off with an amazing vanilla custard sauce.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the cake:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">4<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">cups AP flour<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">1<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">cup sugar + 3 TBS<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">1<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">TBS baking powder<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">\u00bd<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">tsp sea salt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">1\u00bd<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">tsp cinnamon<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">8<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">oz cold unsalted butter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">2<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">peeled cored and large diced granny smith apples<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">2<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">peeled cored and large diced golden delicious apples<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">4<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">large eggs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">2<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">tsp vanilla extract<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">1<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">cup whole milk<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For the custard:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">4<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">egg yolks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">1<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">cup whole milk<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">\u00bd<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">cup sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"quantity\">1<\/span><span class=\"ingredient-name\">tsp good vanilla extract<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Preheat the oven to 375\u00b0F.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cake: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a food processor, cream the <strong>flour<\/strong>, 1 cup of <strong>sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon,<\/strong> and <strong>butter<\/strong> until the <strong>butter<\/strong> is the size of <strong>rice<\/strong>. Remove to a large bowl.<\/p>\n<p>Fold in the <strong>apples<\/strong> using a spoon until they are completely coated.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate bowl whisk together the <strong>eggs, vanilla<\/strong> and <strong>milk<\/strong> and then combine it into the <strong>flour-butter-apple<\/strong> mixture until combined. It should resemble a thick <strong>dough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Transfer the mixture to a 9\u201d greased spring form pan and bake in the oven at 375\u00b0F for 80 to 90 minutes or until golden-brown on top and firm in the center.<\/p>\n<p>Cool completely on a rack to room temperature before slicing and serving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Custard: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whisk together the <strong>egg yolks<\/strong> in a medium size bowl. Set aside.<\/p>\n<p>Heat the <strong>milk<\/strong> and <strong>sugar<\/strong> in a medium size pot over medium heat just until lightly boiling.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly pour the mixture into the bowl with the <strong>eggs<\/strong> while continually stirring and then pour the mixture back to the pan over low heat and stir until it becomes very thick, think alfredo sauce.<\/p>\n<p>Finish by whisking in the <strong>vanilla<\/strong> and then pour a small amount over a cooled slice of cake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Make-ahead: <\/strong>You can make this cake up to 2 days ahead of time. See storage instructions below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to store: <\/strong>You can cover and keep at room temperature for 3-4 days. Cover and keep it in the refrigerator for 5-6 days and freeze it covered for up to 3 months. Be sure to thaw it in the refrigerator for 1 day before serving.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to prep everything up to make for another day, the apples will hold well in pineapple juice for up to 3 days.<\/p>\n<p>To cream the dry ingredients together with the butter, feel free to put all of it in a food processor and pulse until the butter is incorporated.<\/p>\n<p>If the top of the cake starts to brown too quickly, place a piece of parchment paper on top by just laying it on there or tent it with a piece of foil.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yield: 12 Billy Parisi This delicious homemade apple cake recipe is easy to prepare and is topped off with an amazing vanilla custard sauce.
