3851 | Mrs. Martha Ellen Whittemore Mrs. Martha Ellen Whittemore, a lifelong resident of Cambridge, died yesterday at her home, 17 Bigelow street, where she lived for more than a half century. She was 92. She was a step-sister of the late David T. Dickinson, a former mayor of Cambridge. She was born in Cambridge April 30, 1840, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Dickinson. Her father was a well-known Cambridge realtor. In 1858 she married Benjamin Bruce Whittemore, a son of the Rev. Thomas Whittemore, founder of the First Universalist Society of Cambridge. Her husband, who died in 1876, was a member of the soap firm of Whittemore & Hale. They had six children, three of them now dead, and Otis R. Whittemore, of Cambridge, B. Arthur Whittemore of Waltham and Frank B. Whittemore of East Orange, N. J. She also leaves a step-brother, Alexander Dickinson of Seattle. Burial will be in the family lot of Thomas Whittemore in Mt. 3852 | Mrs. Nancy Caples Dies St. Johns, Or., July 18.--(Special)--Mrs. Nancy Caples, an Oregon pioneer and early resident of this place, died Friday at St. Vincent's Hospital at the age of 84 years and 8 months. she had been in ill-health for some time. With her husband, Dr. William Caples, Mrs. Caples settled at St. Johns in 1852. they took considerable land at St. Johns, mainly on the waterfront, much of which they disposed of. This land has become the valuable portion of St. Johns. Two children, Elizabeth Caples, of St. Johns, and Mrs. A. Henlow, of British Columbia, survive. 3853 | Mrs.Nancy N. Caples, Born in Maine, Reached Here in 1849. Mrs. Nancy Nowell Caples, an Oregon pioneer of 1849, who died July 17 at her home at St. Johns, where she had lived for nearly 65 years, was born in Berwick Township, York County, Maine, November 28, 1829, and her ancestry was English and Scotch. She was taken by her parents to Michigan in 1836 and to Missouri in 1845. The next year, at the age of 17, she was married to Dr. William Caples, a cousin of the late John F. Caples, a well-known lawyer of this city, and in May 1849, with one child--now Mrs. Jane Dodge, of Woodburn, Or., the young couple started across the plains with an ox team and arrived at "Foster's," the first house this side of the Cascade Mountains--located near the present town of Eagle Creek, Clackamas County--late in October. The first home of the young couple, a one-room log cabin, was built on a dontion land claim in November, 1849, on which a portion of the City of St. Johns now stands. When 12 years old Mr. Caples united with the Methodist Church, and was a charter member of the first Methodist Church of East Portland, organized in 1859.
