4104 | Purchased land on Mill Lane and built a house which still stands today: p. 11 Peter Nowell [Jr.] was a yeoman farmer, a lumberman, and a grist and saw mill proprietor. He lived in the historic house on Mill Lane built by his father [Capt. Peter] around 1725 and bequeathed to him in 1740. This house he left to his son Daniel Weare Nowell who bequeathed it to his son Peter. From Peter's daughter Susan Nowell Shaw it passed to a son Joseph H. Shaw who died in 1906 leaving heirs Patience L., wife of George F. Dixon of Wells and a nephew Joseph F. Boston of Boston, Mass. On 19 Oct. 1909, it finally passed from Nowell heirs when it was sold by Patience Dixon and Joseph Boston (YCD 578/164) to Marion G. Richardson of Brockton, Mass. On 16 Oct. 1925, Marion G. Richardson, now of Richmond Hill, Queens, N. Y. sells (YCD 754/229) this property to J. Frank Currie, a librarian, and his mother, Ida D. Currie of East Bridgewater, Mass. mr. 4106 | Quoting CC Martin "In 1641, there developed considerable conflict within the church at Exeter, and Rev. Wheelwright fled to the Province of Maine for his personal safety. Edmund, a disciple of Rev. Wheelwright, also became dissatisfied with conditions prevailing at Exeter, and removed with his family into the wilderness beyond the sounds of religious strife and settled on the banks of the Wabhannet river, in the Province of Maine. Between Cape Neddock and Cape Porpoise, was a large unsettled district which offered good advantages for agriculture, and fishing. It was here that Rev. John Wheelwright and his followers from Exeter, including Edmund Littlefield, concluded to found their parish. Peace at Last at Plantation called Wells Edmund Littlefield saw a future in the running streams and he built his first saw mill on the falls of the Webhannet River in 1641. Soon there was a thriving business in both the cutting of lumber and the sawing it into smaller board lengths. The settlers at last had found a haven in Wells. This was the only Puritan settlement on the coast, and here they found peace and happiness. Here, they had the freedom to worship as they pleased." | LITTLEFIELD, Edmund (I3460)

4107 | Quoting CC Martin: "In the year 1638, Edmund followed Rev. [John] Wheelwright [first pastor of the First Church of Braintree] to Exeter in the Province of New Hampshire....Rev. Wheelwright purchased from the Indians a tract of land thirty miles in extent, surrounding the falls of the Squamscott River, and it was here that he established the First Church in Exeter. Edmund was described as a 'warm partisan' of Rev. Wheelwright. Edmund became a member of the original Exeter combination, as it was called, and he received an allotment of land. His son Francis received four acres. The Combination As the second season advanced, the need of some form of civil government became apparent. There were no constituted authorities over the patent of New Hampshire, and the Exeter settlers were driven to the expedient adopted nineteen years before by the Pilgrim Fathers [Mayflower Compact], and perhaps employed by one at least of the other plantations upon the Pascataqua. They agreed upon a voluntary association for governmental purposes, which was drawn up by their pastor and subscribed by him and probably the greater number of the adult males of the settlement. It bore date of the fourth day of July 1639; just one hundred and thirty-seven years before the adoption of the memorable Declaration of America Independence." | LITTLEFIELD, Edmund (I3460)
