4553 | Witness to the Life of Mary G. Robinson by her daughter, Jane E. Cudmore Mother was born on December 20, 1899, 11 days before the turn of the century. She was born on a farm on Cambridge St. in Winchester. She had fond memories of life on that farm and would tell about her father working alll week to get his produce ready to take to market in Boston early, early on Sat. morning by horse and wagon. When she was 16 two events effected the rest of her life. She received a driver's license for the Mass. Registry of Motor Vehicles and she joined the newly formed Winchester Grange, of which her parents were charter members. The Grange is a fraternal organization for farm families that extols God and family and the fruitful labor of the farmer. In the late 1920's she met Windover Robinson who moved here from Prince Edward Island, Canada. Together they joined the Methodist Church and were married there in 1929. Dad joined Winchester Grange. They both loved the ritual and their fellow members and for over forty years they attended meetings not only here in Winchester and surrounding communities but all over Massachusetts. But, most of all they loved being with their children and grandchildren. Most holidays were spent at Grammie and Pa's and we have the home movies to prove it - turkey after turkey. Dad died in 1970. Annette and I lost a wonderful father, but she lost a loving husband and best friend. It wasn't until 17 years later when I experienced the same loss that I realized the apin and grief she suffered. But, she knew life must go on and about a year later a dear friend, Gladys Mullen, came to share her home. They enjoyed many interests in common - church and Grange - but each maintained her own independence. Soon after that Helen Dewar and Janet Manzie moved into half of Mother's house and so, she surrounded herself with family and friends. She loved having her grandchildren come to visit and was always interested in their activities. She especially loved having the great-grandchildren come and play with simple toys she boasted she had purchased at the Methodist Church rummage sale. She continued her active role in the things she loved to do and one of her last enjoyable evenings was spent when she and I went together to a retirement party in honor of Annette's service to the Social Service Dept. of Winchester Hospital. She was proud and looked forward to the additional time Annette would have to spend with her. But, shortly she was stricken with a severe heart attack. In her pain and suffering she had two wishes - to go home and not to be alone. Annette and I with the help of Clellan, Janet and grandchildren did all that was humaly possible to fulfill her wishes - but we could not allay her fears. So, God in his infinite wisdom took her home and she is not alone. She is with a husband who loved her and family and friends who have gone on before her. She has received that welcome plaudit: "Well done good and faithful servant". We thank God for the many years of her earthly life and for opening his everlasting arms and granting her peace.
