He [George Emery Littlefield] was seventh in descent from Edmund1 Littlefield of Exeter, N.H., and Wells, Me., the immigrant ancestor of the New England Littlefields, who was baptized at Titchfield, co. Hants [Hampshire], England, 27 June 1592, and died, presumably at Wells, Me., 14 December 1661. Edmund1 Littlefield was the eldest son of Francis and Mary Littlefield of Titchfield, co. Hants. Francis was born probably about 1565 and was buried at Titfield 22 October 1618. Mary, who was the first wife of Francis, was buried at Titchfield 29 October 1605. Francis Littlefield was a clothier and left a good estate. His son Edmund married at Titchfield, 16 October 1614, Agnes (also called Anne or Annis) Austin, probably the "Agnice awstine" who was baptized at Titchfield 1 February 1596/7, daughter of Richard of Titfield. She sailed for New England, with six children and two servants, in the Bevis from Southampton, in May 1638. Her husband and elder son Francis had probably preceded her in emigrating to New England. Edmund appears first at Exeter, where he signed the Combination on 5 June 1639, and in 1643 he received a grant of land at Wells. He left an estate of £588.13s.4d.

Exeter, signed the combination 5 (4) 1639. His wife Annis, ae. 38, with 6 children, and servants John Knight, and Hugh Durdal, came in the Bevis in May, 1638. It may be presumed that he either came at that time, (though not named in the passenger list,) or had come before.

Signed the Combination |
- Quoting CC Martin:
"In the year 1638, Edmund followed Rev. [John] Wheelwright [first pastor of the First Church of Braintree] to Exeter in the Province of New Hampshire....Rev. Wheelwright purchased from the Indians a tract of land thirty miles in extent, surrounding the falls of the Squamscott River, and it was here that he established the First Church in Exeter. Edmund was described as a 'warm partisan' of Rev. Wheelwright. Edmund became a member of the original Exeter combination, as it was called, and he received an allotment of land. His son Francis received four acres.
The Combination
As the second season advanced, the need of some form of civil government became apparent. There were no constituted authorities over the patent of New Hampshire, and the Exeter settlers were driven to the expedient adopted nineteen years before by the Pilgrim Fathers [Mayflower Compact], and perhaps employed by one at least of the other plantations upon the Pascataqua. They agreed upon a voluntary association for governmental purposes, which was drawn up by their pastor and subscribed by him and probably the greater number of the adult males of the settlement. It bore date of the fourth day of July 1639; just one hundred and thirty-seven years before the adoption of the memorable Declaration of America Independence."

with Rev. Wheelwright |
- Quoting CC Martin
"In 1641, there developed considerable conflict within the church at Exeter, and Rev. Wheelwright fled to the Province of Maine for his personal safety. Edmund, a disciple of Rev. Wheelwright, also became dissatisfied with conditions prevailing at Exeter, and removed with his family into the wilderness beyond the sounds of religious strife and settled on the banks of the Wabhannet river, in the Province of Maine. Between Cape Neddock and Cape Porpoise, was a large unsettled district which offered good advantages for agriculture, and fishing. It was here that Rev. John Wheelwright and his followers from Exeter, including Edmund Littlefield, concluded to found their parish.
Peace at Last at Plantation called Wells
Edmund Littlefield saw a future in the running streams and he built his first saw mill on the falls of the Webhannet River in 1641. Soon there was a thriving business in both the cutting of lumber and the sawing it into smaller board lengths. The settlers at last had found a haven in Wells. This was the only Puritan settlement on the coast, and here they found peace and happiness. Here, they had the freedom to worship as they pleased."
