Obituary |
26 Oct 1908 |
Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts, United States [2] |
Taunton Daily Gazette, p. 9 |
In this city Oct 24, 1908, Timothy Scanlon aged 91 years. Funeral from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Richard C. Abbott, 77 Broadway Tuesday at 8 o'clock. Solemn high mass of requiem at St. Mary's Church at 9 o'clock. Burial at St. Francis Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
Timothy Scanlon, an old and respected citizen of this city passed away peacefully at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Richard C. Abbott on Broadway after a lingering illness. Death was due to old age and a complication of diseases and his death marked the culmination of a long period of feebleness The deceased was born in Cork, Ireland in 1818 and while in the full strength of manhood he moved to this country at the age of 19. He settled in Maine, coming to this city in 1842 where he took up residence in East Taunton.
He was a stone mason by trade, being regarded as one of the best at his business in this part of the country. He put in the foundations for most of the large manufactories in this city and surrounding towns. It was Mr. Scanlon who laid the first stone for the foundation of the Taunton Insane Hospital, and later built the massive wall around the property.
In 1873 he was called to Bridgewater where he built the foundation for the "Tug" Lube Works which was built at that time. The interior of St. Mary's Church, where he had been for many years a faithful attendant, was finished by him.
No matter how large the contract he secured, he was always painstaking and careful in his work and his labor was in constant demand. For the past 25 years he had done comparatively little labor, his advanced age and failing health necessitating a needed rest.
The deceased came of that sturdy stock of emigrants who have done much to build up the country and his place will be difficult to fill. His was a long and faithful life. He was honest and conscientious and during his long life he won to him a host of friends, who sadly regret his demise.
In the home he was an exemplary and model husband. He was the father of 15 children, 8 of whom are living. His wife preceded him to the great beyond several years ago. The surviving children who have the sincere sympathy of the community in his bereavement are Superintendent of Public Buildings, John R., Thomas of Plymouth, Timothy of Middleboro, Joseph, Alice R., Mrs. Richard Abbott, Mrs. Mary Ford and Mrs. Patrick Hanrahan.
