- Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters:
The Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters was founded in 1879 by a group of Irish immigrants to provide life insurance benefits for its members. Lawrence Scanlon was a member of the Taunton Court, No. 73 from 12 Mar 1889 until his death (Death Claim 2437). The Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters was renamed the Catholic Association of Foresters in 1960. The Foresters still exists as a fraternal life insurance society. The Irish Ancestral Research Association (TIARA) rescued the archival Foresters records from consignment to the dumpster, and in 2011 transferred ownership of the Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters (MCOF) records to the University of Massachusetts Boston for the purpose of preserving and making available to researchers the records of the organization.

The flag on the Central Police Station is flying at half-mast in memory of a member of the police department who passed away this morning. Patrolman Lawrence A. Scanlon died at his home, 11 Church Street at about 2 a.m. after having sustained a shock about midnight, and his death caused widespread grief not only among the members of the department with which he had been so long connected, but among the public at large, for the deceased was well and favorably known all over the city. He discharged his duties with a faithfulness that won for him the confidence of his superiors and his geniality and kindly ways, made many friends for him.
While he had not been in the best of health for the past year still he had recently been at work and yesterday was as usual at the station at East Taunton where he had recently been located. Mr. Scanlon was appointed to the police force in 1888 by Mayor R. Henry Hall and has served continuously ever since in different parts of the city on both day and night beats.
Before he became a patrolman, he worked as a stone mason, which was the trade which he learned when a young man. He was a highly respected member of the Taunton Court No. 73, M.C.O.F. [Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters] He leaves a widow, four sons, and two daughters to mourn his loss, also several brothers and sisters. He was about 59 years of age.
