1631 first settled as part of Kittery called Kittery Commons or North Parish

1650 called Unity after ship Unity which transported 150 Scots prisoners of war captured at the Battle of Dunbar who were indentured to work at Great Works sawmill until able to pay for their freedom.

1690-1691 during King William's War, the village was burned and abandoned.

1692 York County, Maine in Province of Massachusetts Bay

1703 Resettled and called Newichawannock.

1713 Township of the parish of Berwick incorporated and separated from Kittery by the General Court of Massachusetts 9 Jun 1713. Included the present Berwick, what is now South Berwick (inc. 12 Feb. 1814; annexed an additional small portion of Berwick in 1881), what is now North Berwick (inc. 22 Mar 1831) and a small part of what is now Lebanon.
