[Today] Contrecoeur ( French pronunciation: [k?t??kœ?] ) is a city in southwestern Quebec , Canada on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River ...Contrecoeur is approximately 45 kilometers (28 mi) northeast of Montreal and is accessible via Highway 30 , the main road from the southwest, which continues on to Sorel-Tracy. In 1672, Antoine Pécaudy of Contrecœur , a soldier of the Carignan-Salières Regiment , was granted a seigneury by King Louis XIV . He and 68 other pioneers founded the town in 1681, and it is named in his honor. A migratory bird sanctuary is located near the town on Contrecœur Island.

The religious parish Holy Trinity of Contrecoeur was erected canonically in November 1832, while the municipality of the Parish was created in 1845 taking the same territory as that of the religious parish. The first elected mayor was Amable Marion, merchant.
